Canine Purchase
Our recommended use of a Comfort Dog is the purchase of a trained dog by a district or individual for use on a single or multiple campuses. The dog will reside with a staff member or designated handler who will bring the dog to campus and care for them as a family member while not working.
Once the decision has been made to purchase a Comfort Dog, a deposit will be taken and a contract set in place. An Interquest representative will work with the district or individual to begin training your dog and implementing the program. This involves considerations including how to introduce the program to staff, students and parents, who will be the dog's handler, where the dog will reside when working and after school and how best to utilize the dog as a tool to meet your objectives. We will discuss your specific needs and create a dog tailored to your school. Once your dog has completed training, he/she will be delivered to you. The dog's handler(s) will be required to complete a basic training course, AKC Canine Good Citizen test and certification at your location before introducing the dog into your general school environment.
The typical timeline from signed contract to trained dog is between 3-8 months, up 18 months. The timeline is is unique for each individual dog depending on if a suitable young adult can be located versus raising a puppy for you. At this time, we only train Labradors and Golden Retrievers or mixes of the two. An additional cost will apply for breed/sex/color requests.
**We do not train personal dogs. Our dogs are individually hand selected specifically for the campus or district for temperament, health and suitability.
